The science of molecular hydrogen (H₂) water
Molecular hydrogen (H2) is the smallest and most bioavailable antioxidant molecule known. Effervescent tablets like Aloha Hydrogen Tabs use a magnesium-water reaction to release measurable H2 gas into ordinary drinking water. This page summarizes what peer-reviewed research does — and does not — say, and gives you the criteria to evaluate any hydrogen tablet brand honestly.
1. What is molecular hydrogen?
Molecular hydrogen (chemical formula H2) is the lightest and smallest molecule in the universe — two hydrogen atoms bonded together. Because H2 is neutral, non-polar, and tiny, it diffuses freely across cell membranes and the blood–brain barrier, which is why researchers have studied it as a bioactive gas since the landmark 2007 Nature Medicine paper by Ohsawa et al. [1]
"Hydrogen-rich water" simply means water in which dissolved H2 is present at a measurable concentration, usually expressed in parts per million (PPM) or milligrams per liter (mg/L).
2. How effervescent hydrogen tablets work
Modern hydrogen tablets, including Aloha Hydrogen Tabs, use elemental magnesium combined with organic acids (typically malic and tartaric acid) in a fast-dissolving effervescent matrix. When dropped in water, the tablet initiates a controlled reaction:
Mg + 2 H₂O → Mg(OH)₂ + H₂↑
The magnesium is consumed. The organic acids neutralize the magnesium hydroxide byproduct, and molecular hydrogen escapes as fine nanobubbles that dissolve into the water. This is the same reaction category first described in Alex Tarnava's patent filings on "open-cup" hydrogen tablet technology (US Patents assigned to Natural Wellness Now Health Products / H2 Analytics, licensed to multiple commercial brands).
3. What "PPM" really means (and why brand claims vary)
Every hydrogen tablet brand publishes a peak PPM number, but the number is only meaningful under stated conditions. To compare brands fairly, insist that any PPM claim identifies:
- Water volume (a smaller cup gives a higher PPM number)
- Water temperature (cold water holds more H2)
- Container geometry (open vs. sealed changes off-gassing)
- Measurement method (GC-TCD or reliable electrochemical H2 probe)
- Time from dissolve to measurement (H2 dissipates within minutes)
Peer-reviewed literature commonly considers ≥ 1.5 ppm the minimum "therapeutically relevant" concentration. [2] Most tablet products claim 8–12 ppm at peak; real-world results typically settle in the 6–10 ppm range after normal handling. [3]
Aloha's finished-product PPM will be published on this page once third-party testing (via a GC-TCD lab such as H2 Analytics) is complete. We deliberately do not publish an unverified peak number.
4. The peer-reviewed research base
Molecular hydrogen is one of the most studied bioactive gases of the last 15 years. As of 2026, PubMed indexes more than 2,000 papers mentioning H2 in a biomedical context. Highlights of the research base include:
- Selective antioxidant activity. The Ohsawa et al. 2007 paper in Nature Medicine first showed that H2 selectively neutralizes the hydroxyl radical (·OH) and peroxynitrite (ONOO−) — two of the most damaging reactive oxygen species — without disrupting beneficial signaling ROS. [1]
- Recovery and exercise. Multiple randomized trials report reductions in exercise-induced lactate and oxidative-stress markers after H2-rich water consumption. [4]
- Metabolic markers. A 24-week randomized double-blind trial in Diabetes, Metabolic Syndrome and Obesity reported reductions in body-fat percentage and improvements in inflammatory markers with high-concentration hydrogen water. [5]
- Cognition. Because H2 crosses the blood-brain barrier, small pilot studies suggest measurable effects on mental fatigue and mood; larger trials are ongoing. [6]
What the research does not yet support: claims that hydrogen water treats, cures, or prevents any specific disease. Aloha does not make such claims. Federal regulators (FDA, Health Canada) have not approved molecular hydrogen for any therapeutic indication.
5. How to evaluate any hydrogen tablet brand
The molecular hydrogen category has matured — 20+ brands now compete in the USA and Canada. Use this checklist to separate serious brands from marketing-first ones:
- Is a certificate of analysis (CoA) published, ideally by an independent lab?
- Is the tested PPM value stated with the water volume, temperature, and method used?
- Are the ingredients — magnesium source, acid blend, binders — fully disclosed?
- Is the product manufactured in a GMP-certified facility?
- Does the brand honor a satisfaction guarantee without subscription lock-in?
- Is there a real customer support channel with a physical business address?
- Does the brand avoid medical claims not backed by cited evidence?
6. Safety, dose & who should avoid it
Molecular hydrogen has a strong safety profile in the published human literature — it is a metabolic gas already produced by gut bacteria in small amounts. Common-sense usage guidance:
- Adults 18+ only. Follow all package directions.
- Typical protocol: 1–3 tablets per day, each in 12–16 oz of water.
- Drink promptly (within 5–10 minutes) — H2 dissipates.
- Because tablets contain elemental magnesium, monitor total daily magnesium if you take other supplements.
- If you have kidney disease, are pregnant, breastfeeding, or on prescription medication, consult your healthcare provider before use.
